L Visa
The L visa falls under the foreign temporary worker category. It is also referred to as an Intracompany Transferee Visa. The L-1A and L-1B visas allow the temporary workers to enter and work in the United States for a limited duration of either 5 or 7 years.
The visa enables foreign workers to work at a branch, parent company, or subsidiary of their current employer at the management or executive level, or at a level of specialized knowledge, in the U.S. The L visa requires that the applicant be continuously employed by the company for one full year within the past three years of applying for this visa.
L Visa Categories
There are two primary categories under this tier of an L visa. The categories include:
L-1A Visa
This classification allows an employer to transfer an employee at the manager or executive level to its affiliate or offshore office in the United States. This category also enables a foreign corporation that does not have a U.S. affiliate to deploy an executive or manager to the country to form one.
L-1B Visa
This category allows a U.S. employer to transfer an employee possessing specialized knowledge regarding their organization’s interest from its office abroad to its U.S.-based office.
