TN Visa
The TN visa is a non-immigrant employment visa that allows citizens from Canada and Mexico to work in professional occupations in the U.S. This arrangement is available for all citizens from countries under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), now referred to as U.S.-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) agreement.
Eligibility
Applicants from Canada and Mexico who have a valid job offer in the United States are allowed entry on a TN visa. The eligibility criteria includes:
- Proof of Canadian/Mexican citizenship.
- The applicant’s job must fall under the list of NAFTA professions.
- A full-time and valid employment offer from an employer in the United States.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, at minimum.
- The applicant’s profession lies within the appropriate regulations.
Canadian citizens are eligible to apply for the TN visa at a consulate or embassy in Canada, CBP-designated U.S. ports of entry, or at a designated pre-clearance / pre-flight inspection stations. Mexican citizens are eligible to apply for the TN visa at a consulate or embassy in Mexico.
Visa Duration
The initial stay for TN visa holders is up to 3 years. However, if applicants wish to extend their stay, they must obtain permission or apply for an extension. Applicants may travel internationally on a TN visa and are allowed to leave the United States before their status expires.
